Volunteering During COVID-19

Dear GDVLP Volunteers,

We are so very grateful to you, the valued volunteers of the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP).  We hope you are all doing well during these difficult times, given the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all in this together and staying safe from the virus is the first priority for everyone.

The GDVLP staff members are still working and accepting new clients, but our offices are closed to the public. Our staff has transitioned to a four-day workweek from their homes and one day in the office (each of us having our own day to maintain social distancing).  This has allowed each of us time in the office to deal with mail, new cases, and organization of the things we take home to complete.  We continue to provide legal services to those in need in the best way possible and as technology and Court limitations allow.

The legal needs of our clients have significantly increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we need help from our volunteers more than ever. We know people are dealing with this transition differently and you might find yourself more overwhelmed than normal.  We can respect that and understand if you need a break from volunteer opportunities. You may find yourself having more time while isolating at home. Volunteering may now be an option to you as your schedule has changed. If so, we would love to have you join us in serving the legal needs of low-income Miami Valley residents.

We have suspended our onsite services due to the Governor’s Orders, but we are trying to transition most of these into virtual counsel and advice or limited action clinics where appropriate. Debt collection lawsuits and unemployment are some of the legal challenges our clients face. We have pro bono opportunities for you to remotely help our clients through these virtual clinics and telephone counsel and advice.  We are working on ways to virtually hold both divorce and bankruptcy clinics, as well.

Please contact us if you can help. We can be reached by calling the office number and leaving a message (937-461-3857) or by emailing us at gdvlp@gdvlp.org.  We appreciate all you do. We are thinking of you during this trying time and look forward to working with you.  If we can be of any help to you please be sure to contact us.
